my question to this lot is:

are housefreak, partymad, silent, kingpin, woteva, funksouldja, etc all the same one or 2 people having arguments with or amongst themselves in the third (and sometimes 4th or 5th!) person/s?

any thoughts on this?

ps. i dont mind which of your multiple personalities reply.

bobbyblanko - If you noticed I thought what silent said was hilarious pisses me off when I see peeps dissing what other promoters do at least guy's like Lester and the rest of gang try and keep the scene alive. Might not be the best DJ's in world but I respect what they do...

PartyMad

2007-09-12 11:46:41+02:00

bobbyblanko> Hi! I am not housefreak, silent, kingpin, woteva, funksouldja.
But I do think Funksouldja = housefreak.

KingPin> I agree with you, it upsets me when people like Regan and others have bad things to say about promoters who are trying to keep the house scene alive in Cape Town. Like I said before I am sure it's not cheap to bring these guys down. I have heard from sources that it could cost R15000 upwards to do these international events.

b.

2007-09-12 14:11:16+02:00

Partymad: It doesn't cost that much when you have a JHB promoter to share flight costs with. Trust me.

btw Regan was doing a good job of 'keeping the scene alive' at the last party of his I went to. why pick on him?

bobbbyblanko

2007-09-12 14:15:24+02:00

partymad and kingpin> out of interests sake, how would you define the 'house scene'?

PartyMad

2007-09-12 14:21:25+02:00

b> Last time on the forum he blasted Lester and Alvin for doing the Joey Youngman event, he called them P03s & Naa...ers you can figure it out. Which I thought was uncalled for. I know for a fact that the Joey party costed more than R15000 to do. Which is fairly expensive in my books. I did some costing, the average flight will cost you about R25000 + Dj fees of about $900 per set Then accomadations, then there is promotional materails, supporting djs, venue costs you looking at already more than R30000.
So if you do share it with another promoter you looking at 12-15000.

PartyMad

2007-09-12 14:39:20+02:00

b> I think it is slowly growing, but the music has changed from the MORE days, Scene is better than what it was 5 years ago, I have seen and heard more internationals in the past 3 years, than what I did in the last 10 years I have been partying. People seem to enjoy the Jackin sound with a mixture of deep house. Deep house parties seems to get started later and now that most of the clubs are forced to close at 4am, do not think it's good to have strictly deep house party.

b.

2007-09-12 14:41:58+02:00

seem to recall it was so much about the promoters, rather that Joey Youngmans music was shite. fair enough imo.

PartyMad

2007-09-12 14:47:50+02:00

b> Ok you right on that point, but why blast them for something that not much people are willing to do? I went to that event and I thought it was top class, I have never seen deluxe pump like that, I mean the entire club was Dancing from the front all the way to bar and I hope that the Swirl People event will get the same support. Everybody must stop hating and do what they do for the greater good.

Russell

2007-09-12 16:18:12+02:00

i guess we're back to the same argument that not everyone likes the jacking sound. when i poll people's opinions (and i mean people who have been into deep dance for a long time in all its guises) they comment that the sound is kinda childish and immature to a certain extent. maybe they're getting older and are acquiring a more refined taste in the music they would like to hear, hence a lot of them preferring not to support events and leaving it to the youngens to choof and dance to jackin jerk house. there are other events in CPT that push the boundaries though and if you are in the know, you will know about them. some of them (gratefully) are private events so let's all play nicely and not dis one another. you never know how things change. we can only learn from the international scene what the benefits of working together yields.

Partymad> there are always two sides to every story. internationals coming to SA could also mean that they are not in demand overseas, hence discounting their rates to cater for weaker SA currency...or they have friends here...and that's the other side of the story.

we can all play the jacking sound if we wanted to, but if you are into the collection of music like a lot of the (dare i say) more mature jocks are, then imo the jackin sound is really not something which fits into a record or music collection. e.g. i'm not playing my Tango or Fetish promos of yester year, but I could still play something on Wave or Global Comm for example.

Be that as it may, i go out in CPT to stay in touch with the vibe in any case but thats' just me i guess

bobbyblanko

2007-09-12 18:00:23+02:00

partymad> good point re the number of internationals that are hosted these days.
i think its in keeping with a worldwide trend of less huge parties / events and a more club focused direction, hence the many internationals playing in cape towns clubs these days, from deluxe to fiction and beyond.
from that perspective, people have certainly benefited, particularly when it comes to networking possibilities.

russ> re the jackin' sound: there are a number of djs who started playing years ago whose music still hasnt progressed beyond that point to an extent! and since some of of them have been very successful peddling a radio friendly version of deep/funky house, it stands to reason that a number of the up n coming younger djs will try to replicate the sound thats served the commercially established jocks so well.

still, they should know better...

KingPin

2007-09-13 08:58:57+02:00

I say each to there own everybody is going to have a different opinion about who plays what. At the end of the day it's all about having a good time, which I think happens on both sides of the scale. Not everybody enjoys the as Russ put it the more refined taste in music, some people actually enjoy the more jacking sound. Either way there is enough in the scene for everybody to have a piece of the pie, look at Deluxe as being a starting point for peeps coming from the commercial scene to the house scene who at a late stage move on to the more refined sound. Me thinks that benefits everybody doesn't it...We all have a part to play so respect what the next guy does especially when what he's doing could benefit you at a later stage...

what i'd like to see coming through in ct & rsa in general is some more production & less genre bashing. then perhaps we'd all be a lot more qualified to comment on the prevailing sounds of today - once we are steering the ship & not swimming in the wake?

the pot shot taking at guys like joey youngman / sexual chocolate / over the last few months is all fair & well, but how much of an understanding can the naysayers really claim to have of what sounds are relevant without having ever released anything themselves?

it's time to stop immitating & start creating people, then maybe we won't need to bring out so many djs as we'd have something to call our own...

''it's time to stop immitating & start creating people, then maybe we won't need to bring out so many djs as we'd have something to call our own...''

erm, can i just say thats utter fucking bollocks?

there are so many superb djs in cape town that fall within the house spectrum (deep/funky/hard/minimal/prog/etc, etc) that the 2 or 3 existing cape town venues that dont play r&b could quite easily have a very strong line up of excellent home grown talent every night of the week.

besides that - and dont get me wrong, im all for people coming over from wherever to play here - how many times have we all seen the local guys blow the cream of international talent away.
its like football - the residents will always have home turf advantage, ie. know the crowd and what rocks that particular house.
i have been witness to a number of international guests getting it wrong when playing in cape town, having been paid vast sums of money whilst the local talent finds it hard to get a free drink during their set.

bring them, but make sure they have something to bring us.

bobbyblanko

2007-09-13 17:50:45+02:00

cawitness> sorry, but your argument falls apart in a number of ways, the main one being the big pay off line in the middle:

''how much of an understanding can the naysayers really claim to have of what sounds are relevant without having ever released anything themselves?''

since when has that had anything to do with making someone with, lets say for eg. 5 to 10 years of djing experience, relevant?

as an analogy: if you can make spaghetti, ie boil the water and add a ready made woolies bolognese sauce, that doesnt make you heston fucking blumenthal. it just means you are a very average chef.
by your reckoning, because you have prepared a dish, regardless of its quality or the real effort and passion put into it, you are now qualified to comment on a professional chefs cooking.
so what about the millions of people out there who absolutely love eating great food, going to good restaurants, travelling the world and sampling its cuisine, but never cook at home...? according to you they would be devoid of the sense of taste or the concept of good food because they dont cook themselves!

its a bullshit argument.

there are shitloads of fantastic djs who dont produce, but i can tell you there are far more producers who cant dj to save their fucking lives.

KingPin

2007-09-13 20:13:00+02:00

bobbyblanko - Well said "there are far more producers who cant dj to save their fucking lives." Some of the top producers are utter bollocks and should stick to producing...

cawitness

2007-09-14 07:43:45+02:00

bobbyblanko> so still no answer to my question then, guess we can count the amount of producers on this board with one finger...

no matter what metaphor you choose to use, it doesn;t change the fact that half of the airbags on this board haven't given so much as a toe clipping to the shaping of electronica, except for playing someone else's tunes...

bobbyblanko

2007-09-14 08:07:45+02:00

as both a producer and a dj, and as someone who doesnt mind the stuff that ive heard by swirl peepz (2 or 3 promos sent to me), i still think its a bullshit argument.
its a great idea to encourage capetonians to produce more electronica, but thats their CHOICE, and if they choose not to, but still want to voice their OPINION on music or djing, to deny them their choice or opinion is purely cultural fascism.
so, youve never had an opinion on a film you have watched, as (correct me if im wrong) youre not a director?

PartyMad

2007-09-14 10:20:18+02:00

cawitness: ie those who can, produce and those who can't, dj? I've tried my hand at production. I wasn't happy with the results at all. If I had put them on a few blank cd's and shoved them into the hands of everyone who comes to Killer Robot would that make me somehow more relevant?? come on now...

KingPin

2007-09-14 11:07:46+02:00

cawitness - Dude there are a lot more guy's doing production than you know, doesn't mean they haven't released anything they don't know what they talking about. Also up to a few years ago some of the top DJ's produced by Cape Town were not into production and I don't think they did to bad...

Silent

2007-09-14 11:28:01+02:00

Just for the record - I'm not a producer yet although I'm looking for a decent one up here although I suppose I can do it on my own - have 11 backing tracks that Mark Wilkinson sent me from Kidology and I get to pick one that I can sing to - was going to work with Dino but we can't work together cos we argue too much... so its me in the studio - I'll have to edit a bit so although I'm cheating cos I have some tunes from Dab hands, dynamite souls, MW - I can still show my talent by adjusting the song to the way I want it.

If you want to do me a favor go ask Dino if he's still cross with me.

cawitness> there seems to be loads of guys producing + mastering and not releasing in CPT. they are playing them in sets all over the show. most, if not all the jocks that i know in CPT are or have tried producing. its a natural progression. i sucked at it so i went to a top-notch guy who produces a range of electronica to make some stuff for me. there was better stuff out there though. but at least i tried.....so i'm not 100% sure where your 'toe-clipping' comment is coming from, which gives me the impression that you're seem to be mis-informed..anyway, my 2 cents worth.

on another note, i'm rather looking forward to that 2nd stage at the earthdance event so let's hope the waether holds up.

bobbyblanko> are you keen? we've got a posse going

bobbyblanko

2007-09-14 17:12:26+02:00

cawitness seems to have gone a bit quiet...

as far as ''playing other peoples records'' goes, that in itself is a massive contribution towards the ''shaping of electronica'' - djs are just as responsible as producers for setting the scene.

lets face it, a lot of stuff is made with the intention of getting played out by specific djs per genre, so producers need to realise they are not as creative as they often like to think they are, but are really just a service to the djing industry.

ha ha!

russ> my love for you is deep, but you should know by now how i feel about trance...
so enjoy, be safe and try to make it out of there in less than a million pieces!

quite a interesting debate about nothing i reckon.....im very interested what mr belmans will be dishing out at deluxe....
Those guys at deluxe are brave to spend cash to for an international and i guess in their own way are basically just keen to see their heroes.....same as i was a few years back.
Got to see some outstanding and some real shitty djs......shaped me as a producer now and a dj then.
I know for a fact that a lot of the punters love the jackin house sound at deluxe so i guess its apt.
man ive cleared the floor the a few times trying to be adventurous....
So it makes sense to have belmans down for a set at Deluxe...
Wether i or any other person on this post enjoys i guess is pretty irrelevant as they probaly not regular supporters of Deluxe. This is a by no means me trying to defend shit just stating the facts as i see it.
The production point yeah its pretty difficult and if i had to think about it ive produce some absolute shit in my time lol.....Its a difficult game for me personally trying to manage creativity with business.
Whoever is doing this should know what im talking about.
As to the drug aspect of clubbing i hate to say it but dance music and drugs are intrinsically tied together just the way things are. A few years ago it was coke and cat now its crystal meth....even further back acid and exctasy.
Thats the how the cookie crumbles.....im sure they doing drugs at bang bang, roosevelt etc......i just gave up on trying do something about it....today i dont preach i dont comment about it personally it aint for me if its for you then have fun safely please and take care.

checked out robert hood a couple weeks back, super!

how's the party-scene being over the WC? I know my little cousin was trying to sneak into a few venues around there...

If you're an angry white male in your late 20's into metal, a band is looking for a singer.

The brief:

You:
25-35, good sense of humour, lank charisma, must drink beer and hard tack, must look the part, must tune lank, have strong opinions, must prefer the old south africa, must have own transport, must be angry, must be white, english or afrikaans, must be a total mental metal head to the core. Must like, listen to, be able to sing: Slayer, The Haunted, Snot, At The Gates, Lamb of God, Pantera, etc. No death/black metal.

We:
36, 37, 41, we laugh a lot, we have loads of charisma, we drink beer and cider mixed together and we drink tack mixed with anything or on it's own, we have strong opinions and we tune lank kak, we are english white people and we prefer the old south africa, we listen to Slayer, The Haunted, At The Gates, Lamb of God, The Refused, Faith No More, Machine Head, Billy Talent, Pantera, Carnal Forge, Snot, Alexisonfire, Deftones, Tool, Gallows, you get the picture.

We have access to the best studio and award winning producer in the country and will record our second full length album next year. Other than that we have nothing planned.
So if you think you can hack it and work with us, we will certainly give you a try and let's rock out.
e mail us your story if you are keen, and if you don't fit the description - don't bother us.

a truly hilarious quote from dinkys hype / blurb / blah when describing how her broad range of sounds come together:

''something like a sun-dappled clearing in the woods''

ok then.

that would be 'undervalued'

now, now, Navs, i'll have no dissing of Mr Richards round here, ta.

if anything hes unervalued. it takes quite a bit of talent to hold down a residency at a place like fabric for a couple years...

Good riddance they booked the same overpriced djs who with there narrow minded thinking tend to not think beyond their’s and their mates record labels when playing, incest that ran the same gauntlet forever, recurring on an annual basis. residents Terry Francis, Richards anyone???...pretty overrated huh. Change is good; no one club should dominate the landscape. I hope to god this happens to an unORIGINal club in my town…with the winds of change blowing briskly into the sails it’s already starting to happen.

Long live Berghain with their dominant music policy and indestructible residents.

tragic. some of my best club experiences ever at that place. Looks like Matter completely backfired on them. they had to pump millions into it to keep it alive and now its taken them down with it.
