House without a home...
Sunday, 30 March 2008
South Africa is one the biggest consumers of house music, yet there remains no dedicated space for it to exist.
Hit Entertainment’s ‘House Without A Home’ initiative is aimed at changing this - and it aims not only to provide a home, but to populate it too.
But this is more than a series of events. It is a philosophy that will connect the South African spirit of house with that of the rest of the world’s burgeoning music homes.
Placing the acclaimed with the emerging, and developing the know-how through a series of music events, the project is so much more than just another house DJ coming to enjoy the beauty of our country - and being paid top dollar to play here.
To make this house a home, the international DJs not only perform, but share their knowledge and play a part in developing the skills of up-and-coming local producers on the local scene.
The Ananda Project will be touring South Africa at the end of March 2008 and will play gigs in both Cape Town on the 30 March and in Johannesburg on the 5 April. Both performances will be preceeded by music workshops conducted by Chris Brann and Joe B of King Street Records.

Achmat: Hope that demo I submitted makes a nice coaster for Hardy's coffee mug. Tell him thanks ever so much for the response. Will still come and check them out though.

That f@%* McQueen has still not learnt his lesson re: taking people for a poes. Saw right through his terrible demo invitation. Poor JHB guys wasting their time.

yeah at the back of my mind I knew what the outcome would be, and the reasons for the request, but I figured I'd give it a go anyway. At least now I remember why I don't make demos in the first place.

It is unfortunate that your mix was not suitable, maybe u need to review your sound in the light of the act...Maybe boring minimal techno does not fit this event???
I am aware that u were offered a gig where your style of music was more suited...
bb.>Atleast Bruno had the balls to submit a mix

kaiser> yeah, you know how spineless i am. kinda like the last time couple times wamdue were here and i didnt really have the balls to be their support dj, but somehow managed to quell my nerves and get behind the decks...
anyway, i'll be at the gig regardless, so if you wanna put your money where your mouth is, come and have a pop at me there - im always keen on a good laugh when im out!

Unbelievable.
Hardy/Kaiser Sorsay: Are you labouring under the misconception you can post anonymously? It astounds me that you would come on to this board and post what you didn't have the intestinal fortitude to tell me in person. But if thats your game so be it:
Firstly, you confused my mix with someone elses and then promised to get back to me after you'd reviewed mine. I never heard back from you. One week later I sent you an sms requesting a response which you didn't have the courtesy to respond to either. This was probably the most offensive part of this negotiation until you deemed it fit to post the above.
Secondly, since you raised it, if you think that Beanfield, Rich Medina, Glimpse, Aaron Carl, Fish Go Deep, DJ Disciple and Ron Trent constitute 'boring minimal techno' you have no business commissioning mixes from anybody.
Thirdly, after this experience, I don't believe you offered the other gig alongside the Martinez Bros with any degree of honesty or authority, but good luck with it anyway. I am busy enough with my own calendar not to need the additional work.

whilst we're on the topic - what is the point of a 'demo'? ive never been booked for a gig because of a mix cd (in fact if ive recorded more than 5 or 6 mixes in my entire career id be surprised) - you get booked on reputation and performance.
its like asking 20 established bands to come and do a live show solely for the promoter (who lets face it generally doesnt have a fucking clue) so that he/she can decide whether or not they should support the headline act.
ive seen countless djs so many times who have blown my mind live but when you hear their mix cds they are as bland and formulaic as any one of the literally 1000's of mix cds doing the rounds at any given moment in time.
i have mountains of mix cds given to me over time that i often end up giving / throwing away without ever having listened to (sorry guys!).
if you as a promoter are really interested in what a dj can do, get off your fat ass and go and see them play live, to a crowd, in the kind of environment that they thrive in, and dont base your opinion on some sterile mix cd that could for all intents and purposes belong to some bedroom dj from slovenia and has been downloaded, burnt on to a cd and labelled as somebodys elses.

Hi All
Thanks for all the interesting comments...
Bruno:
1. Yes, i must apologise for not getting back to you...been busy
2, Yes, i mistook your mix for some nasty jackin house mix I got.
3. Your mix, though i did enjoy it, I am of the opinion that it is not suited for this particular event.
4. I would not have asked you for a mix, if i didnt actually want you to play
Bobby...
1. I asked you for a mix...
This was not intended to show you any disrespect, rather to familiarise myself with the sound you are playing at the moment
2. I for one, have not actually heard you play for what..? 6 years?
So it was my intention to update myself
RPG...you wanna say something..
say it to my face!! in fact call me 0728890987
I received about 60 mixes from no-name djs, some who are actually quite good. The purpose of having this open call was to identify the so-called 'new breed' out there. So RPG, I would like to have heard your mix
Bruno, thank you for taking the time to put a mix together and as I said to you, I would rather have you play with The Martinez Brothers later this year.....
So guys I hope to see you all at the gig...if i am proved wrong, so be it. I am entitled to my own opinion, just as you are..
PS.... call me for tickets..0728890987

So true bb, I have 3 mixes I've done in the past 9 years and not given one to a promoter to score a set.
I have however given copies to those who are keen, deserving and willing to savor my extraordinary talents.
