Levi’s® Young Guns blows into Cape Town on Thursday May the 22nd
No excuses. In your face. Raw and emotive. Packed with talent. But also uplifting, inspired, unique and like a breath of fresh air. That’s the legacy that Levi’s® Young Guns has created in the past two years, tearing across the country and spreading the sounds of alternative, immediate, energetic music to their thousands of fans across South Africa. These are the big names of tomorrow, the young who never settle for less and are intent on making a mark that is unique, overpowering and hard-hitting. So put on your brave face, leave your inhibitions in the closet and venture out to enjoy this tour de force, a countrywide programme brings a few upstarts to a town near you.
The chaos blows into Cape Town on Thursday May the 22nd, landing at 14 Hope Street, a venue so cool it doesn’t need more than it’s address as a name. Last year’s Cape contingent saw The Beams, Unit-r, BlaqPearl and T.O.P. sharing their styles with hordes of hungry fans. This year it all starts with Jitsvinger and ETC Crew who are going to cross dimensions, shift paradigms and turn it all on its head with their eclectic range of strictly South African sounds.
ETC Crew represent. They represent Cape Town. They represent Mzansi’s diverse cultures and they represent a hip-hop culture that has been thriving in their community for years. But they also reconstruct, packing their tracks with mad energy, jazzy breaks and refreshingly comedic lyrical layering. Forget paint-by-numbers hip-hop, these guys ignore the outlines and colour in wherever they want, in all shades and with a dextrous amount of artistic skill. These four poetic warriors have played alongside underground hip-hop’s finest, slain rivals in local battles, toured Copenhagen and have just finished recording their first EP. But even these accolades don’t compare to the sheer force of their live performances, where their stage is a world, and they are its storytellers. Miss them and you’ll regret it forever. Quinton Goliath is Jitsvinger. And Jitsvinger is blowing up all over the Cape. He’s rising fast and, with the help of some legendary producers, is turning heads and winning hearts with his album Skeletsleutel. And as much as he’s true to his Cape roots, performing everywhere from Cape Flats Parkjams to city clubs and at the prestigious Spier Poetry Festival, he’s making international waves, collaborating with German and Swiss crews, being remixed by Q35 of Vienna and getting released in Japan. All this and he still finds time to participate in the Robben Island Museum Summer School project and give creative writing lectures at the University of Stellenbosch. Goliath is a young giant on the hip-hop scene, and a massive presence live. He’s gonna be large, so catch him while you can.
