Of course, who can forget this little gem :

"According to Max, the album, which features a range of languages and many new and whacky cultural references, is really just an attempt to be coloured. “I like coloureds,” he says. “I want to be coloured.”"

RIP CDJ-1000

While the death of one iconic piece of Technics shaped DJ technology may seem lingering, another has most definitely been decided. The announcement of Pioneer's original CDJ-1000 was one of those you-remember-where-you-were moments which redefined the DJ game completely. But with the new species, in the shape of the CDJ-2000 and 900 having dawned, the CDJ-1000 now finds itself being shipped off to the technology retirement home. Yes gear geeks - the CDJ-1000 is now officially discontinued… well definitely in the UK anyway.

While it has been on the cards for a while, the first confirmations came through last week, with an official announcement first seen here this week. For the hard of clicking:

Pioneer’s Martin Dockree said:

“It is with mixed feelings that today we announce to the channel the discontinuation of the CDJ 1000MK3…….thanks to the hard work of our then newly appointed direct retailers, installers and established distribution, as well as the DJ’s who instantly recognised it as the first real practical DJ CD player, it very quickly became an industry standard fixture in the DJ booth.”

There does seem to be denial from the US side of the pond, but the above statement is very official, and I've verified it with Pioneer UK myself, so could for now just be over here. But it would be foolish to imagine that the CDJ-1000 will continue to be sold all over world except in the UK. This however doesn't seem to effect the CDJ-800 which does sit in a price bracket considerably lower than the 900 and 2000.

Of course, you'll still be able to lay your paws on CDJ-1000 mk3s, but strictly while stocks last. There seems to have been a small reduction in price recently, but not enough that you'll be running to snap them up, unless you have to replace one of course.

As ever, no word on what Pioneer have next, put having already indicated that he rekordbox software will play a key part in their future strategy. I'd expect to be playing with more new stuff at BPM in October though.

So CDJ-1000 - we bid thee fond farewell, with a metaphorical viking in a burning boat sendoff to sea. You came, you saw and you most definitely conquered. We were powerless to resist in your rampaging midst, taking up occupancy in all the biggest residencies in the world. And now, the next generation is here to fight off any invaders in your territory. But it is going to be a tough fight. Only time will tell if the new breed has the killer instinct of the old.

Rapper in a coma in New York hospital

American rapper Guru, born Keith Elam, suffered a heart attack this weekend and is currently in critical condition at a New York hospital.

Details are thin but it has been confirmed that he is in a coma due to complications following from cardiac arrest.

The news was broken by Elam's sister Tricia.

Elam, a former member of hip-hop duo Gang Starr, was due to perform at this year's Cape Town International Jazz Festival as part of his Jazzmatazz project alongside Solar and the 7 Grand Players.

Festival organiser Rashid Lombard has confirmed that he has received a statement from Elam's management team confirming his heart attack and that he will not be able to perform at the festival in early April.

"I was very sad to receive the news early this morning," Lombard said.

"We're waiting for more details to be provided so that we can send our support to him and his family. We're hoping for news that it's not too serious."

The organisers are looking at a replacement for Elam's spot on the Bassline stage.

"It's a regrettable position to be in but there is enough time for us to find another act. We're looking for somebody in the same genre with as strong a name," says Lombard.

ok, the daft punk album may have been one long in-joke, but then again, if you can take the piss and earn shitloads of cash whilst making complete fools of the industry and its wannabees, why the fuck not?

b.>Fair enough, but Justice at 22? Yikes.

b: Cape Town has built an entire subculture out of that album FA. you should check out their scene sometime:)

b:I think Daft Punk at number 4 is the biggest mystery. That entire album was ridiculous. and not in a good way.

Connect the dots b! I'm not sure if that's really the album i'd pick to make the point, but DP had it going on way before justice hit the scene...

I think the Villalobos at number one is about on the money. That album, abstract and strange though it is, was hugely influential in determining the path of club music in general over the last ten years. Metro Area made number one on the Top 100 singles with Miura, so they got their reward there.

I think Daft Punk at number 4 is the biggest mystery. That entire album was ridiculous. and not in a good way.

so, any further thoughts on that RA 100?

i reckon in terms of influence (from a spotters point of view, natch) the Metro Area album has to be the one - it pretty much relaunched the concept of shopping for dubby disco cuts and rarities from the 70s thru the NY punk funk era and somehow managed to make acid house cool again. half the deep house / nu tech funk coming outta berlin and such at the moment owes it a worthy nod.

my 2 cents worth.

"Feel sorta confused by Die Antwoord. I wonder if they will be the type of band that ‘opens up for Kanye West/Radiohead’, or if they will be more like the band Aqua who sang the hit song “Barbie Girl.”
